The Legend of Pepe
"Once upon a time, …." (No, this is NOT a fairy tale.)
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…." (No, this NOT a space opera.)
"Call me Ishma-pepe." (No, no whales in this story.)
"No, Senorita Wilder, I have no car. They must have meant my little mule, Pepe." (from Romancing_The_Stone, Zemeckis, 1984)
In this 1984 movie, the "mule" turned out to be a powerful Sport Utility vehicle, capable of leaping rivers and evading the Federales in hot pursuit.
As we bicycle over hill and dale, everyone became quite used to having Stewart provide the cargo-carrying functions. Need a stick of gum? Kleenex? Bike tools or a spare tube? Never fear, Stewart always had plenty in his spacious handlebar bag and rack trunk. (Stewart bought a touring bike, and he was certainly going to use its extra carrying capacity!)
Well, it wasn't long before this behavior was connected to the historical role of mules and burros, and Stewart picked up the nickname "Pepe."
